Kilt Sizing Guide | How to Measure for a Kilt | Highland Kilt Company
Kilt Sizing Guide
Finding the right kilt size is simple once you know where to measure. Follow the steps below to get a comfortable, traditional Highland fit.
Important: Do Not Order Your Jean Size
One of the most common mistakes customers make is ordering the same size as their pants or jeans.
Kilt sizing does NOT match American jean sizing.
Kilts are worn higher on the body than pants—usually around the navel, about 1–2 inches above your hip bones.
Most customers find their kilt size is 2–4 inches larger than their jean size.
Example:
If you wear a 36 in jeans, your kilt size will usually be 38 or 40.
However, this can vary by body type, which is why measuring is always best.
Step 1 – Measure Your Waist
Using a soft fabric measuring tape, measure around your waist at your navel where the kilt will sit.
Order the nearest whole size DOWN from that measurement.
Example:
Waist measurement: 39"
Recommended size: 38
Adjustable Kilt Fit
Our kilts feature adjustable leather belts and buckles that allow the waist to expand slightly.
For example:
- A size 34 kilt measures 34 inches at the tightest belt setting
- It can expand to nearly 36 inches at the loosest setting
This built-in adjustability helps ensure a comfortable fit.
Measurements for Made-in-Scotland Kilts
If you are ordering one of our custom wool kilts made in Scotland, you will also need the following measurements.
Seat
Measure around the widest part of your hips and seat.
Length
Measure from your navel down to the center of your knee.
This ensures the kilt hangs correctly in traditional Highland style.
Measuring Tips
For the most accurate results:
✔ Use a soft fabric tape measure
✔ Have someone else measure you if possible
✔ Stand naturally while measuring
Avoid using a metal construction tape measure, as it can easily give inaccurate results.
If you prefer, you can also stop by a formalwear or suit shop and ask for a quick waist measurement.
